Why should a company never trust this statement from another agency, company, freelancer, digital marketer or anyone who claims to be an expert in Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? This is because this statement is one of the first signs of bad SEO strategies in place, also known as Black Hat SEO. 

Black hat SEO is SEO strategies that have been discontinued and outed by search engines such as Google. Black Hat SEO strategies will often guarantee a ranking in Y timeframe because they are using strategies that should not be used, ever, never ever. This can include but are not limited to, keyword stuffing, spammy backlinks, cloaking, duplicate content and so many other strategies.

The cost was extremely high, the website was like a 90s directory and the content was copy and pasted from 20 other websites in their industry. This company cold- calls companies in this industry with this exact statement. They “promise” a ranking in Y time and “promise” to bring in so many leads, they will have to turn the phones off. 

The thing with promises like this is that to a business person, this sounds wonderful! Why not get so many “sales” that you have to turn the phone off. The truth is, they were using PPC ads to bring in leads, which is fine, but the same PPC ads were being used in locations all over the United States. 

The organic SEO strategy that was in place by this other agency was a traditional case of plagiarism. The content was copy and pasted from one of the other 20 websites, images and all, and the keywords were just changed to their location instead of new market research and competitor analysis.

You got to page one, yay! Now, you can not believe that you never got this close with those other guys, but fast forward a few months and this first page ranking does not bring in leads. This is because it isn’t enough to rank fifth on SERP, but to rank for keywords that are relevant to your target audience, company and industry!
